Katherine “Kat” Jones
Katherine guides and delivers research insights, strategy recommendations, naming and development of key messages, as well as workshops and training. Kat’s particular passion lies in uncovering the soul of a brand and getting to its core essence so that it can be clearly positioned and ultimately, creatively expressed. She’s known to ask discerning questions that precisely unearth the radical clarity.
Trained as a medical illustrator, Kat has always been interested in both science and art. Medical illustration requires the ability to deeply understand a complex operation, disease, or molecular concept, and then translate that into a story for many to understand. Similarly, finding the radical clarity of an organization, and then translating that into a name, messaging, or positioning that then tells the organization’s story for many to understand requires the same ability to sort large amounts of information, listen deeply, recognize patterns, and then pinpoint the “surgical moments” or defining elements of an organization.
The path from medical illustration to finding radical clarity started in the 1990s when Kat worked in 3D visualization producing animations, illustrations and CD-ROMs for clients such as The Smithsonian, Time Warner, Merck, Glaxo, Hasbro and Mattel. There were not many women working in computer visualization at the time, so Kat was motivated to work on products that would invite girls to be comfortable using computers. Her direction on top-selling Barbie Magic Hairstyler CD-ROM helped establish the girls software market and led to her out of pure medical work into consumer branding focused on teen girls. Just before starting Milkshake, Katherine worked on several films including the title sequence for Fight Club, and concept designs for The Cell and Minority Report.
Katherine has more than 25 years of experience in unearthing radical clarity, designing experiences, and communicating ideas. She was awarded the Austin Ad Fed’s “Ad Woman of the Year” and the American Marketing Association’s Marketer of the Year Award. Katherine serves on the boards of several community organizations, is a member of the Texas Lyceum, AIGA, and the Association of Medical Illustrators.
Raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Katherine graduated from University of Michigan with a BFA in Fine Arts and a BGS in Zoology and earned an MA from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Biological and Medical Illustration.
